"Hi! I'm Jen and I'll be your host!"
HomeMade’s Virtual Quilting Retreat is a 6-week quilting event where you will learn how to make a quilt from start to finish! Even if you’ve never made one before. During the 6 weeks, you will get access to 5 video classes & 5 follow up Live events where we will take you through each stage of the quilting process.
Beginner sewers will love the step-by-step video instructions (released Fridays), and the chance to ask questions LIVE (after you’ve had a chance to get sewing, on Mondays). No matter your skill level you’ll all LOVE having everything you need delivered to your door!
Wherever you are in the world, doesn’t matter, each participant will be entered into our HomeMade Retreat Room on Facebook. This space will allow us to congregate before the event, take the classes together, post our progress and share our stories! It’s a whole new way to come together. (and be productive too!)
Designed by Jennifer Jones / Penelope Handmade
We’ll be making the Lottie by Penelope Handmade in your choice of Holiday, Scrappy, or Classic (shown above)!
This 5 session Quilt along will span 6 weeks. It includes 5 video classes, taking participants through each stage of the quilting process. Below is specifically, what will be covered during our Virtual Quilt Retreat!
- Prep – Wash/prep your fabrics
- WEEK 1 – Cutting & organizing
- WEEK 2 & 3- Sewing/Piecing the blocks
- WEEK -4 – Assembling Rows/borders & Sashing
- WEEK 5 – Quilt Sandwich & Basting
- WEEK 6- Quilting & Binding
Even though the retreat is over six weeks, you’ve got access to the classes for a full year. If you follow the course and finish eveyrthing week to week, you’ll be finished by the holidays, or go slow, take your time and work at your own pace.
Supplies & Machines:
Lots of us will be using Janome machines in this event, but some of us won’t. It’s all good. This event is all about the love of quilting, so all brands are welcome.
The Lottie Quilt can be completed with any brand of sewing machine and basic presser feet (zig zag foot, a quarter inch foot is helpful, or Janome HP foot). To start, you do need to have a basic knowledge of your sewing machine. By the end of the weekend, you’ll definitely be a stronger quilter!
Your box of supplies will be delivered to you via courier prior to the event. Once all boxes have been delivered we will schedule a LIVE box opening. If you want to peek early you can or join your fellow sewers around the world and dive into your box together LIVE with Jen as she unpacks all the goodies with you!
All class videos will be streamed on YouTube and in the Facebook group with the instructor available to answers questions throughout the class—for an interactive, one-on-one experience all from your own home.
Each class will be approximately 90-120 minutes in length. Classes will be rolled out once a week on Fridays, with a second LIVE Q & A on the following Monday, once you’ve had a chance to try that week’s technique. But remember, you’re free to go at your own pace with no pressure to finish within the class time or even the week! You’ll have access to all the classes and videos for 1-year. So no rush! Press pause, take your time or watch the complete class and sew later.
Here’s what you can expect in your HomeMade Virtual Quilting Retreat
- 5 video classes that will show you how to make a quilt from start to finish.
- A box filled with everything you need to make your own 75” x 75” Lottie quilt. Each participant will be shipped a box full of nearly everything they need to make their own quilt.
- Instructions & Patterns included.
- Special guest appearances from some of our (and your!) favourite quilters.
- and so much more still to come!
This event is open to all levels of sewers, from confident beginners to those who’ve been sewing their whole lives. Everyone will leave the retreat with a full heart, and a big head start on your holiday quilting!
NOTE: Typically, we include a whole bunch of extra goodies, this box will ONLY include the supplies for the quilt.
All three quilts follow the same pattern, however, there is a slight variation in the cutting and piecing between the Holiday/Scrappy version and the Classic Lottie. The classic Lottie is 9 identical blocks. Which is a slightly easier sew. Because of that, the quilt we will be showing in the videos will be the Holiday Version. The Scrappy Solids is assembled the same way as the Holiday version. Assembly on all three quilts is the same. So don’t worry, we will still be able to address questions regarding the Classic, and the differences between the quilt will be mentioned throughout the class, so whichever quilt you choose you will be able to easily follow along.
You have the option of three kits seen in the photos above:
- The Lottie in Holiday Colours is featuring the Cozy & Magical Collection from Art Gallery Fabrics. They come in a variety of warm solids and prints against a soft lightly patterned background. Back fabrics will vary.
- The Scrappy Lottie comes in a variety of bright vibrant SOLID colours from Art Gallery Fabrics. They pop against a bright white background and brightly coloured binding. Backing colours may vary. See photo above.
- The Classic Lottie features Sunburst from Art Gallery fabrics. It has a beautiful teal blue solid background, complimented by vibrant patterns in shades of lighter blues, pinks, and oranges, with a fresh and playful cotton backing and binding of different patterns.
For the next few months, we’ll be posting cool stuff in the Virtual Quilting Retreat Room, you’ll be able to meet other participants and we’ll be doing a few LIVE prior to the big event.
The full schedule will be released in October – but Fridays and mondays are class release and LIVE Q & A days.

Hi! My name is actually not Penelope. It’s Jennifer. 🙂 My great-grandmother, Penelope Eleanor (we call her Mama Nell), was a seamstress and would sew for my mother “a dress before she woke up in the morning.” She passed that love of creating and making on to my grandmother, Elma Ruth, and my mother. It is a legacy I hope will live on in my daughter, Eleanor Ruth.
